Tai Lam Chung Reservoir (15km)

Location: Tai Lam Chung Reservoir, Hong Kong
This is a bit "out there" and is not a run many people who live in Hong Kong and only run on a casual basis will know.  For sure, you won't be alone (and watch out for mountain bikers), but if you want to get right out of the city, then this is a great run to do.

Tai Lam Chung is one of a number of freshwater reservoirs built across the territory and is located in Hong Kong's second largest country park (that in itself warrants a visit).  As it is a loop, there are a number of exit and entry points although perhaps the most obvious point is to start on the dam at the south west end of the reservoir (and where I have mapped the run from).  On a sunny day the water is emerald green and dotted with islands and it is about as far away from the city as you possible want to be.

The run itself is 15km on a mix of smooth service roads and wooded trail.  If taken anti clockwise will start with some gentle ups and downs and as it goes on, it follows the edge of the reservoir affording some pretty stunning views before toward the end, giving you thighs and calves a real workout with some steep steps.
To ensure that you complete a circle of the reservoir, at the to north end around the 5.5km mark, be careful to come off the service road to stay on the Maclehose Trail Section 10 to bring you back to the dam.  If you are not running by the reservoir then you have gone in the wrong direction!

Distance: 15km
Type: Hard service road and rocky trails. Expect some steps.
Traffic: Walkers and some mountain bikers. The very occasional van on the service road
Suitable at night: No.
Refreshments: Limited.  Bring your own
Getting there: Takes some effort,  The MTR to Tsuen Wan (Tsuen Wan line) and then a taxi or bus onwards to Tuen Mun Road interchange / gold coast piazza where there is a bus stop. Head up Tai Lam Chung Road and pass the Correctional Institute until you reach the dam.  Other options from Central include
  • CTB Bus No. 962B (Connaught Road Central) to Gold Coast Piazza
  • Green Mini Bus No. 43S to So Kwun Wat San Tsuen
and return
  • Green Mini Bus No. 43S to Castle Peak Road (opposite Gold Coast Residences, Phase 2)
  • CTB Bus No. 962B to Connaught Road Central
I would imagine it would be safe enough to store belongs near the dam al though ensure you take money / phones etc. with you.
